The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences brings together research activities in the mathematical sciences at Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities. Launched in 2005, the Maxwell Institute has been supported by funds from the Scottish Funding Council (SFC); it builds on the complementarity of the three departments and on long history of collaboration between them, best exemplified by the establishment and continued operation of theInternational Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS). The Maxwell Institute is part of a broader structure, the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering and Mathematics (ERPem), which provides a framework for the cooperation between UoE and HW in engineering and mathematics.
The vision for the Maxwell Institute is the development and expansion of a world-class research centre in the mathematical sciences, distinguished by strong interactions between research themes and a strong connectivity to the world outside mathematics. To deliver this vision, the Maxwell Institute aims to enhance the breadth of mathematical research addressed at the two universities, to expand its impact on a range of applications to other academic areas, and to increase the reach and impact of our research by promoting collaborations with other academic disciplines, industry and commerce, and the engagement of the public.
